Group Agenda – Week 3

1. Audience Revision Activity

So, for this activity, you’ll be working with the student example projects. In class on Monday, we went through and analyzed the projects with regard to both their strengths and weaknesses. This activity asks you to think specifically about how the audience is considered by the author — and how that audience affects the content of the essay itself.

  1. Working with a student example essay of your group’s choosing, make a copy of that essay and place it in your group’s document (in the Week 3 Activities folder) for this week. (I think the easiest way to do this would be to copy and paste it.)
  2. Go through and identify as many places as possible where the author makes it clear who their audience is and who they are writing this essay for.
    • Make note of these places and take a few notes about how the author makes that clear – how you know who the audience is. (Comments seem like the best way to do this.)
  3. Go through and as a group, revise at least the first two pages of the project and the conclusion for a different audience. This can be an audience of your choosing, but the changes should be significant and your new audience should be made clear through the revisions you do.
    • I recommend making a copy or copying and pasting the original into a new document for your group and then using the “Suggesting” mode in Google Drive.
    • You can have fun with this.
    • Everyone should be working together for this process – talk, share ideas, revise accordingly.
    • I recommend starting with the places you took notes on (#2 above) to begin the revision process.
    • You are welcome to revise more, if you’d like.
  4. Take some time to reflect on the process and answer the following questions at the end of your document:
    • What audience did you choose? Why?
    • What revisions did you make?
    • How did your chosen audience affect the revisions you made?
    • What struggles did y’all experience along the way?

2. Talk about your How-to Projects

This is the last group meeting before the first draft of your essays will be due (by class on Monday), so just take a few minutes to really talk through your project, ask any remaining questions, and ensure you feel confident about everything heading into the weekend.

3. Don’t forget to do your Participation Notebook entry for the week

The heading here is pretty self-explanatory, but yeah… have completed your participation notebook entry by the end of the day Friday, 10/16.
